Astrology in the Torah

According to Jewish tradition, the time your baby is born isn’t random. Each month is filled with it’s own meaning and carries a different shade of divine light, of spiritual power. Torah sources teach that the time a soul enters the world is deeply intentional. The calendar, the constellations, and the spiritual seasons all shape the soul’s journey in its earthly life.

“Every person that is born into the world must say: The world was created for me; I was created in this time, in this place, to fulfill my unique task.”

-Gemara Sanhedrin 37a

Astrology has been a part of Jewish thought and practice for millennia. The Torah approach to astrology is to use it as a tool for understanding the spiritual structure of the world. Avraham Avinu was a master of astrology – he saw in the stars that he wouldn’t have children, and Hashem told him “Go out from your astrology – I am above the stars.”  This doesn’t mean astrology is false; it means that while the stars may reflect the natural order, Hashem can override the order at any time.

Throughout Jewish history, many great sages explored astrology with deep reverence. Shmuel the Amora was so versed in the heavens that he said he knew their paths like the streets of his town. Ibn Ezra wrote extensively on astrology, seeing it as part of Hashem’s natural design. The Vilna Gaon studied the stars in relation to Hebrew months, divine energies, and time itself. The Ramban and Rabbeinu Bachya acknowledged its truth but reminded us that our ultimate connection is to Hashem, who governs above the mazalos. The ancient mystical text Sefer Yetzirah ties the months, letters, planets, and soul traits into a deeply structured spiritual system.

For us as parents, this means that astrology can offer insight into our children’s personalities: but not their destinies. The stars may describe your baby’s natural tendencies, but they do not define their soul. Hashem created each child with a unique mission, and while their birth moment carries spiritual flavor, their choices, your guidance, and divine providence will shape who they become. Astrology offers a helpful and fascinating lens, but it’s only part of the picture.

What astrology says about your baby

Astrology gives you a way to understand the unique energies present at the moment your baby was born. The planets and signs symbolize different qualities and tendencies that may influence your child’s natural inclinations or strengths.

For example, the planet Mars (Ma’adim in Hebrew) carries powerful energy connected to courage, transformation, and blood – the raw life force that fuels passion and the will to act. The Gemara (Shabbat 156a) links Mars to roles like

  • the mohel (who brings new life into the bris milah)
  • the shochet (who carefully preserves the balance of life through kosher slaughter),
  • and also to the possibility of the destruction of life – a murderer.

All three of these roles incorporate the elements of Mars – courage, transformation and blood. The mohel takes this power and raises it to the holy of holies, the shochet allows others to fulfill the commandment of eating kosher, and the murderer is the lowest level that a human can sink to.

This teaches us that the fiery energy present at birth can manifest in very different ways, depending on how it is guided and nurtured.

Importantly, astrology doesn’t decide your child’s future or take away their free will. It simply points to traits and energies your baby might have, helping you understand and support them. Your loving guidance, your child’s environment and their personal choices will shape who they become far more than any star sign.

Think of astrology as a starting point – a lens through which you can glimpse some of the unique gifts and challenges your baby might face. It’s not a fixed script. Each soul comes with the power to choose its own path and grow into its fullest self.

There are 12 astrological signs – but there a billions of unique personalities in this world. Your baby’s zodiac sign is just the beginning.

Here’s what each month might reveal about your baby’s inner world, using calendar months for easy reference.

January: Capricorn and Aquarius

Capricorn – Aquarius Tevet / Shevat

Capricorn (Dec 22–Jan 19) · Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18)

Born in the heart of winter, when light is hidden and growth happens quietly beneath the surface, January babies often feel serious and thoughtful. They carry deep inner strength and spiritual depth, ready to shine quietly in their own way.

Capricorn Traits (Tevet – Saturn)

  • Seriousness & maturity: Capricorn gives these babies a naturally serious, “old soul” energy. They often seem quietly responsible and grounded, even as infants.
  • Love of structure: They thrive on clear routines and rhythms, which help them feel safe and secure.
  • Inner resilience: Like the winter earth, they hold steady strength beneath their calm exterior.
  • Mission: They carry a gift for quiet leadership—leading by example with patience and perseverance.
  • Sleep style: They usually do well with predictable bedtime routines and may resist sudden changes or disruptions. A calm, consistent wind-down helps them settle.

Aquarius Traits (Shevat – Uranus)

  • Originality & vision: Aquarius adds sparks of creativity and uniqueness, even from early on. These babies can surprise you with flashes of insight or imagination.
  • Independent streak: They may show a subtle desire to do things their own way, even as little ones.
  • Forward-thinking: Aquarius energy brings a natural curiosity about the future and big ideas.
  • Balance to Capricorn: While Capricorn brings structure, Aquarius adds flexibility and innovation—helping these babies blend stability with openness.
  • Sleep style: They might resist routines that feel too rigid but respond well to gentle, consistent rhythms that respect their individuality.

February: Aquarius and Pisces

Aquarius – Pisces • Shevat / Adar

Aquarius (Jan 20–Feb 18) · Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20)

Born as winter begins to soften and the first hints of spring stir beneath the surface, February babies often carry a mix of vision and feeling. They may seem dreamy or deep, with intuitive hearts and minds that wander toward possibility. In the Jewish calendar, this is the season of Shevat and Adar—months tied to growth that begins in hidden places. Shevat brings the sap rising in the trees (Tu B’Shvat), and Adar reminds us that joy can blossom even in darkness. These babies often carry that same quiet awakening inside them—sensitive, hopeful, and full of quiet potential.

Aquarius Traits (Shevat – Uranus)

Originality & vision: Aquarius gives these babies a spark of creativity and forward-thinking energy. They often seem alert, curious, and a little ahead of their time.
Independent streak: Even as babies, they might want to do things their own way, pushing back against anything that feels too confining.
Big-picture thinking: They carry ideas and wonder about the world beyond what’s right in front of them—often surprising caregivers with their insight.
Mission: These babies may be quiet visionaries, here to think differently and bring change.
Sleep style: They tend to do best with rhythms that feel respectful and flexible. A wind-down that allows for autonomy (like choosing a book or sleep sack) may help them settle more easily.

Pisces Traits (Adar – Jupiter)

Emotional sensitivity: Pisces babies are often tuned into the emotional undercurrents around them. They may cry easily or seem to “absorb” others’ moods.
Imaginative depth: These babies may drift into their own world, enjoying music, stories, and soothing sensory experiences.
Compassionate hearts: Pisces brings a softness and sweetness—many caregivers describe these babies as gentle or especially snuggly.
Joyful spirit (Adar): Adar adds a special layer of joy. The Talmud teaches, “When Adar enters, we increase in joy.” These babies may carry a spark of soulful happiness—light-hearted, playful, and able to lift others’ moods with their presence.
Balance to Aquarius: While Aquarius brings bold ideas, Pisces adds emotional nuance and dreamy softness. Together, they create babies who are both imaginative and thoughtful.
Sleep style: These babies are often soothed by music, motion, or scent-based cues. A gentle, emotionally-attuned bedtime routine can help them feel safe and secure.

March: Pisces and Aries

Pisces – Aries • Adar / Nissan

Pisces (Feb 19–Mar 20) · Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19)

March babies are born as the world begins to reawaken. The air softens, the days lengthen, and nature stirs back to life. These babies often carry a sense of emotional depth paired with rising momentum – like they’re wired for both softness and strength.

Pisces Traits (Adar – Jupiter)

Emotional sensitivity: Pisces gives March babies a deep sense of feeling. They may be especially responsive to the moods and energies around them.
Imaginative depth: They often enjoy dreamy play, music, and sensory experiences—even as infants.
Compassionate hearts: Pisces babies tend to be gentle, cuddly, and attuned to the needs of others.
Joyful spirit (Adar): The energy of Adar is all about increasing joy. These babies may have a special gift for lightness—bringing smiles, giggles, and a sense of ease to those around them.
Mission: These little souls may be here to soften the world with empathy, creativity, and laughter.
Sleep style: Pisces babies often respond well to calming rituals—music, rocking, scent cues, or soft lighting can help them drift off peacefully.

Aries Traits (Nisan – Mars)

Boldness & drive: Aries adds a burst of energy—these babies may seem strong-willed, expressive, or quick to act.
Natural leadership: Even from a young age, they might show initiative or a desire to do things “by myself!”
Fiery passion: Aries babies can be intense in their likes and dislikes—full of heat, laughter, or frustration.
Spiritual spark (Nisan): Nisan, the month of redemption, holds the energy of rebirth and liberation. These babies may carry a bold, redemptive spirit—here to shake things up and blaze new trails.
Balance to Pisces: While Pisces brings emotion and fluidity, Aries offers action and confidence. Together, they create babies who feel deeply and act bravely.
Sleep style: Aries energy may make it harder for these babies to wind down – predictable sleep routines and a calm, firm container help them feel safe and settled.

April: Aries and Taurus

Aries–Taurus • Nissan / Iyar

Aries (Mar 21–Apr 19) · Taurus (Apr 20–May 20)

Born during the height of spring, April babies come in with momentum. Aries energy aligns with the tribe of Yehuda—kingship, confidence, and movement. Nissan is the month of geulah (redemption), and these babies often bring breakthrough energy.

Spiritual healing (Iyar): Iyar is known as a month of healing (Ani Hashem Rofecha). These babies may carry a gentle, stabilizing energy that soothes those around them.
Balance to Aries: While Aries charges ahead, Taurus grounds the energy – a child who can be both brave and deeply rooted.
Sleep style: Taurus babies usually respond well to calm sleep routines with comforting cues like sound, touch, or scent. Transitions may take time, but once settled, they tend to sleep soundly.

May: Taurus and Gemini

Taurus–Gemini • Iyar / Sivan

Taurus (Apr 20–May 20) · Gemini (May 21–Jun 20)

May babies bring a calming presence. Taurus is the ox – strong, steady, and made for meaningful work. When the Mishkan was carried through the desert, oxen pulled the wagons that helped the Levi’im transport its heavy parts. Like those oxen, Taurus babies bring calm, dependable strength. They don’t rush – but when they move, it’s with steady, sure purpose.

Iyar carries the healing Name of Hashem: “Ani Hashem Rofecha” – “I am Hashem, your Healer” (Shemot 15:26). These children may be naturally nurturing or sensory-driven.

As Sivan begins, the Gemini influence emerges. This is the month of Matan Torah, the giving of the Tablets, and the power of sacred speech. These babies may love language, learning, and curiosity.

Taurus Traits (Iyar – Venus)

Steadiness & calm: Taurus lends a peaceful, grounded energy. These babies often enjoy slow, cozy routines and familiar comforts.
Sensory delight: They’re tuned into texture, smell, and sound – loving soft blankets, soothing voices, and gentle music.
Strong preferences: They can be calm, but when they want something, they really want it – persistence can show up early.

Verbal spark: They may babble early or respond strongly to speech and sound.
Playful minds: Gemini babies love variety and stimulation—new faces, new toys, and gentle interaction feed their busy brains.
Spiritual insight (Sivan): Sivan is the month of Matan Torah (the giving of the Torah). These babies may carry the gift of communication, connection, and mental agility.
Balance to Taurus: While Taurus grounds, Gemini lifts—together creating babies who are both steady and sparkly.
Sleep style: Gemini energy may bring restlessness, especially if they’re overtired or under-stimulated. Calming wind-downs with soft talking, books, or gentle touch can help ease them into sleep.

June: Gemini and Cancer

Gemini–Cancer • Sivan / Tammuz

Gemini (May 21–Jun 20) · Cancer (Jun 21–Jul 22)

June babies arrive at the turning point of seasons, when spring gives way to summer and light is at its fullest. In the Jewish calendar, this is the time of Matan Torah (Sivan) and the beginning of emotional reckoning in Tammuz, when the cracks in the Temple began. Cancer Traits (Tammuz – Moon)

Emotional depth: Cancer babies tend to be highly sensitive, picking up on the emotional atmosphere around them.
Strong attachment: They often bond deeply with primary caregivers and may crave closeness and familiarity.
Protective instincts: Even in infancy, they may show shyness around strangers or caution in new environments.
Spiritual resonance (Tammuz): Tammuz begins the Three Weeks, a time of loss and longing. Yet within that ache lies strength—and Cancer babies often carry a quiet, intuitive wisdom that knows how to nurture and protect what matters most.
Balance to Gemini: Where Gemini is outward and expressive, Cancer brings inward reflection and emotional grounding. Together, they create babies who are both bright and deeply connected.
Sleep style: These babies do best with warm, nurturing routines—think soft lullabies, dim lights, and plenty of snuggles. Separation (like bedtime) may feel harder for them, so extra reassurance helps.

Following this intense season, Cheshvan—the “bitter” month without holidays—teaches patience, faith, and trust in the hidden growth that takes place beneath the surface. Mazal is real — but it’s not everything

Astrology offers a glimpse into your baby’s soul.

Yes, Chazal teach that the stars have influence. That timing carries meaning. That your child’s star sign reflects something essential about how they’ll move through the world.

But it’s not the whole story.

Each soul is created b’tzelem Elokim – in the image of G-d. Singular. Unrepeatable. With infinite capacity for growth, change, and purpose.

As the Gemara teaches:
“לפיכך נברא אדם יחידי… בשבילי נברא העולם”
“Therefore, each person was created individually… the entire world was created just for me.”

(Sanhedrin 37a)

So yes – pay attention to the timing. Notice what resonates and trust what feels true.

And remember: your baby isn’t bound by the stars.

They are led by their own soul, with a unique path and purpose.
And that soul was lovingly placed in your care – by Hashem’s design.
